Reply of The Zaporozhian Cossacks by Ilya Repin - Canvas Print

About Ilya Repin’s Reply Of The Zaporozhian Cossacks

Interested in this Reply Of The Zaporozhian Cossacks print?

Ilya Repin painted this lovely piece of art between 1880 and 1881.

The work depicts the Zaporozhian Cossack people crafting a letter to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. The Zaporozhian Cossacks were people from Ukraine.

The Sultan had given them an ultimatum. He demanded they submit to his rule even though they had defeated him in war. Thus their reply was full of vulgar insults.

The men in the painting appear to enjoy thinking of rude things to write to the Sultan.

About The Artist

Ilya Repin was a Russian artist alive from 1844-1930. He was born in the Russian Empire in an area that is now Ukraine. He studied surveying in the army and trained as an apprentice to a painter. Many credit him with being the first mainstream European artist from Russia. Later in life, he moved to Finland.

My boyfriend is Russian, and this is his favorite painting of all time. As a moving in gift, I got it for him, and we hung it across from the toilet so all the figures in the painting can laugh at and judge people when they take a bathroom break at our apartment. This has to be the best thing we've ever bought and potentially the best thing this painting has ever been used for. Additionally, I'm really impressed with the quality of the canvas. I expected it to be somewhat cheaply made with potentially muted colors. However, the colors are vibrant, the details never ending, and the material thick and sturdy. Its been hung next to our shower for three months now, and I have noted zero damage or wear.
Pro tip: for a fun game, assign each of the characters in this piece to a friend. Trust me, there's one for everyone.

Color printed canvas poster stretched over mdf frame.Lightly textured canvas sets off richly colored, and rather bad-a#s print giving it that "arty" feel.
Cardboard box had hole in it but no apparent damage. Bad Fed Ex!! Frame could have been 1/2" wider and 1/4 " taller showing more print but not bad.
