The name of the work, Madonna, means “an idealized and virtuous beautiful woman,” it also means the Virgin Mary.

Edvard Munch was a Norwegian painter who lived from 1863-1944. He lived a sad childhood filled with illness and fear of contracting a genetic disorder that ran in his family. As a young adult, he lived a bohemian lifestyle. His mentor urged him to express his mental and emotional state through art. He achieved wealth and fame during life, although his mental health never improved.
