She is riding on a horse nude to protest the taxation her husband imposed on the local peasants. Her husband told her he would revoke the taxes only if she rode through town naked.
The painting is now in the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum.

About The Artist
John Collier was an English painter and writer from England who lived from 1850-1934.
He was a painter of the Pre-Raphaelite style. Collier started painting while he studied at the Munich academy. He was a large part of the family of Biologist Thomas Huxley, marrying two of his daughters.
