This work is from a group called the Faculty Paintings. It was originally a painting on the ceiling of the University of Vienna’s Great Hall. Gustav Klimt painted it between 1900-1907.
There were three paintings Klimt made on the ceiling of the hall. Philosophy, Medicine, and Jurisprudence. The Nazis destroyed all three of these.
The original Medicine painting featured Hygieia, the Greek and Roman God of Medicine. In the art, she is turning her back on humankind.
