About Jean-Francois Millet’s The Gleaners
Thinking about purchasing The Gleaners print?
Jean-Francois Millet painted this lovely work in 1857.
The work depicts 3 peasant women gleaning a wheat field.
Gleaning is the collection of leftover crops from commercial farms when it is no longer profitable for farms to harvest them. This was a legal act according to the Hebrew Bible.
The work famously showed the lowest status of rural French society. It was not looked upon with favor by the upper class.
This work hangs today in the Musee d’Orsay in Paris.
