First let me correct something, this is not an WWII-era fighter plane. It is a Douglas A-1 Skyraider attack aircraft (this particular portrait of an E-model Skyraider). The A-1 was an attack/dive bomber designed in WWII but it was not delivered to the U.S. Navy until 1946-47. The A-1's primary-role was attack and it served during the Korean conflict and later the Vietnam for U.S. and allied armed services. The aircraft was redesigned several times during the 1950s for transport (carrier on board delivery) and electronic warfare. The A-1E, shown here was used by the USAF during the Vietnam war for attack, special-operations, and primarily to support the search and rescue of downed pilots.
