The painting depicts General George Washington crossing the Delaware River. He is leading the continental army during the American Revolution on their way to a surprise attack British forces.
A bombing raid destroyed the original in 1942. There are 2 more versions by Leutze that were not destroyed. One is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The other usually hangs in the White House but is on display at the Minnesota Marine Art Museum in Winona, Minnesota.

His work focuses on patriotic romanticism. He is also known for decorating the staircase as the Congressional Building in Washington DC.
